On 9 May 2009 in Braunschweig klangstaetten | stadtklaenge, a trail, approx. 2 km in length, between and the red light district and the church St.Aegidien will be declared open. Until 28 June, passers-by, whether they‘re in a hurry or taking their time, will have their attention drawn to a variety of sites both urban and idyllic in the vicinity of Allgemeiner Konsumverein, sites that bear the traces of both ancient and more recent history. International sound artists have selected these sites, and here they are transforming the sounds of the city into site-specific sound installations.
Since it was established ten years ago, the Braunschweig Allgemeiner Konsumverein – Society of Art in Braunschweig has regularly brought works from the field of sound installation / sound art / new music to the eyes and ears of the Braunschweig public.
Thanks to the support of our principal sponsor Volkswagen Financial Services AG and that of the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation, the City of Braunschweig and the State of Lower Saxony, we can now for the first time, through our klangstaetten | stadtklaenge project, take the development of sound art in Braunschweig out of the galleries and on to the streets of the city. In doing so we are responding to the public‘s desire to make the connection between city living and contemporary art.
Internationally acclaimed artists have been invited to create works that together form a temporary art trail. Public space will acquire a new dimension. Whether we focus on specific works or are content with a general overview, we shall gain fresh awareness, visually and aurally, of the multi-facetted nature of the urban space that lies between the opposite poles of the red light district and the church Aegidienkirche, and so rediscover this part of Braunschweig for ourselves.
